Specialist Notes

This is an extremely rare first edition of this seminal treatise on applied mathematics by Cosimo Bartoli (1564), which focuses on measurement techniques and the use of instruments such as the compass, the quadrant, and the astrolabe. The richly illustrated work, complete with two folded plates, explains in the vernacular how to measure heights, depths, distances, areas, and volumes, as well as how to perform cartographic surveys. A great popularizer of science, Bartoli used the vernacular with the clear intent of making his content accessible.
