Specialist Notes
A rare first edition of Dioscorides's De Materia Medica, a major source for the history of classical medicine, translated by Marco Antonio Montesiano, a physician from San Gimignano. The work discusses the use of natural substances in the preparation of medicines and was immensely influential during the Renaissance, so much so that much of the medical scholarship of the sixteenth century can be interpreted as a commentary on Dioscorides. The text opens with a dedicatory epistle from the translator to Cosimo de' Medici. Bookplate glued to the inside cover. Renouard 55.142; Camerini 253.
