Specialist Notes
Third Greek edition of Hippocrates edited by Girolamo Mercuriale, with an index by Michele Colombo . Parallel text in two columns. Brunet's "fairly esteemed edition" is important for the Erotianus. Vocum Hippocraticarum collectio . and the Galen. Linguarum Hippocratis explicatio included at the end. Mercuriale's Censura operum Hippocratis had previously been published by Giunta in 1583. Girolamo Mercuriale spent his life among popes, cardinals, emperors, and grand dukes, who often sought him out as their personal physician, and he taught at the most renowned Italian universities of Padua and Bologna. While at the forefront of medical research, Mercuriale was also aware of the importance of ancient physicians and dedicated much of his life to researching, translating, and interpreting their works. All his great philological activities culminated in 1588 with the publication of what is considered, if not the first, at least one of the first critical editions of the works of the great physician Hippocrates.
