Information
In December 1677, just nine months after Spinoza's death in The Hague on February 21, the writings that could not be published during the philosopher's lifetime were collected. The publishing enterprise was promoted and supported by Spinoza's circle of friends who, in 1677, also published the Dutch translation, De nagelate schriften, which was less complete than the Latin Works. In the Posthumous Works, by Spinoza's own will, the author's name appeared only with the initials BdS (as reported in the volume up for auction) and, to avoid risks for those responsible for the publication, the real name of the publisher, Jan Rieuwertsz, was not cited, nor the place of printing, Amsterdam.
