How bidding works

Information

Washington, Imprimerie du gouvernement, 1867. In 8°. 39 pp., light browning and foxing, at the end of the volume a large folded lithographic map of the United States with color outlines, minor defects on the folds, publisher's chagrin binding, gilt title on the cover within a blind frame, slight signs of wear.

Specialist Notes

Extremely rare first edition with French text, published in 1866 to accompany the Report of the Commissioner of the General Land Office, which lists mineral deposits and railroad lines. Founded in 1812, the General Land Office managed the survey, sale, and distribution of public lands in the American West. The intense land development of the era gave rise to the term "Land Office business." The map highlights in particular the development of railroads and the division of Indian Territory. Joseph S. Wilson served as Commissioner of the Office from 1860–61 to 1866–71.
