Specialist Notes

First edition in Italian of this work, originally published in Latin the previous year and translated into vernacular by Bembo himself. Sabellico's work continues and deals with the "modern" history of Venice, from 1487 to 1513. On the verso of card 72, the Cardinal traces a laudatory description of Christopher Columbus, as a humanistic symbol of going beyond the boundaries of the known, of the "humane soul eager for new things". & nbsp;
