Information
A substantial paper manuscript, Naples 1848, 400 x 275 mm. 573 numbered pages and 2 non-numbered pages on heavy handmade paper, full margins, defects on the inner margin of the first quires, some rare foxing, parchment binding with missing spine and losses on the covers.
Specialist Notes
An extremely rare manuscript with occasional annotations and additions, written by Angelo Granito, Prince of Belmonte. The copious material collected was used to draft his famous work , "History of the Conspiracy of the Prince of Macchia and the Occupation of the Kingdom of Naples by Austrian Armies in 1707," Naples, 1861.
The Macchia Conspiracy (named after Gaetano Gambacorta, Prince of Macchia, who participated in it but was not its mastermind) was a conspiracy in 1701 by which the Neapolitan nobility unsuccessfully attempted to overthrow the Spanish viceroyal government, during the succession crisis that arose following the death of Charles II of Spain and the extinction of the Spanish branch of the Habsburgs.
