Specialist Notes

On July 7, 1647, the Neapolitan population rose up against the unsustainable tax burden imposed by the Spanish viceroy. The leader of the popular uprising was the fishmonger and smuggler Tommaso Aniello d'Amalfi, known as Masaniello. The riots lasted several days and ended unexpectedly. On July 16, 1647, Masaniello was assassinated, likely on the orders of the Spanish government or Neapolitan nobles concerned about his growing influence and popularity. After his death, the uprising weakened, but it remained a symbolic event of popular resistance against fiscal and social oppression in the Kingdom of Naples.
