The edition printed in an elegant Gothic font was considered of the highest value by bibliographers, and was produced by Torresani two years after Aldo Manuzio had left the printing house to found his own. Gregory the Great (504-604 AD), a member of a noble Roman family, was prefect of Rome before dedicating himself to religious life. Although inclined to monastic meditation, he was elected Pope thanks to his diplomatic and administrative skills. He is best remembered for promoting the first Christian mission to Great Britain, led by Augustine of Canterbury, with the aim of converting the Anglo-Saxons. His main work, the Moralia, begun during his stay at the court of Tiberius II in Constantinople and completed after his election as pontiff, is an extensive commentary on the book of Job and is considered one of the most extensive theological texts in the West.
