Specialist Notes
First edition of the most interesting treatise on emblematics, complete with numerous illustrations. The work, dedicated to the scholar Giovan Battista Crispo, is divided into three parts: the first deals with how to "carry out the enterprise," the second with hieroglyphics, symbols, and mystical matters, and the third with "depicting the emblems of many natural things." Cicognara: "This volume contains 300 small, elegantly carved woodcuts, and the illustrations exhaust the material with order and clarity" (Cicognara 1871). Manzi, Annali di Orazio Salviani 166: "one of Salviani's most beautiful books." Brunet I, 1557; ; Praz II, 35.
