Joachim Murat ascended the throne of the Kingdom of Naples in 1808, succeeding Joseph Napoleon Bonaparte. A renowned military man and charismatic figure, he sought to consolidate his authority and establish himself in the Neapolitan community, continuing the reform program initiated by his predecessor.
During his reign, Napoleonic-style administrative and institutional transformations were reinforced: the abolition of feudalism, the reorganization of the justice system, and the strengthening of the state bureaucracy were confirmed. Murat also promoted economic and infrastructural interventions, aiming to improve communications, support trade, and make the Kingdom's productive apparatus more efficient.
In the final years of his reign, he sought to assert greater autonomy from France and to legitimize himself as an independent sovereign, promoting the idea of Italian unity, expressed in the Proclamation of Rimini of 1815. The fall of the Napoleonic Empire, however, marked the end of his reign: defeated, Murat was captured and executed that same year. Despite the tragic outcome, his rule left a significant legacy in the process of political and administrative renewal of the Kingdom of Naples.
