Milan, Stabilimento arti grafiche Alfieri e Lacroix, 1937. In folio of 448x375 mm. Pp. [624]. With hundreds of illustrations in both black and white and color on cardboard. The last pages contain advertisements. Editorial binding in cellograf (plasticized cardboard) illustrated in two colors with fasces (minimal dent on the upper cover). Excellent copy .

First and only edition published as a special edition of the “Rivista illustrata del Popolo d'Italia” on the occasion of the foundation of the Italian Empire (May 1936). “The best Italian propaganda photobook from the fascist era […] the ultimate guide to the Italy of Benito Mussolini, the Italian equivalent of the great Russian propaganda photographic books” ( The Photobook , Parr & Badger, p. 175). Probably the most comprehensive propaganda text of the fascist era which, starting from Roman history, illustrates and exalts the colonial enterprises, the land reclamation works and the infrastructural achievements, the finance and the industries of the time. The result of a plurality of contributions (among others by A. Solmi, R. Almagià, A. Starace, M. Appelius, A. Lessona, G. Agnelli, V. Azzolini, G. Paolucci Di Calboli) and of a layout and graphics of great visual impact curated by M. Luigi Poli with artistic contributions by B. Buffoni, E. Carboni, P. Garretto, R. Micaelles, M. Nizzoli and M. Sironi and with photographs by S. Bricarelli, F. Patellani, L. Ridenti and B. Stefani. The impressive iconographic apparatus is made up of photographs by Bricarelli, Patellani, Ridenti and Stefani of the Istituto Luce and by beautiful color plates outside the text, the work of Mario Sironi, Bramante Buffoni, Erberto Carboni, Paolo Garretto, Ruggero Micaelles and Marcello Nizzoli. The extremely innovative graphic design curated by Luigi Poli. The work is structured as follows: History of the past; Fascist Italy; Versailles and Geneva; Precedents of the Ethiopian conflict; The military conquest of Abyssinia; Foundation of the Empire; The imperial economy.
