Specialist Notes

Edward Steichen (born 1879 in Bivange, Roeser, Luxembourg; died 1973 in Redding, Connecticut) is an immortal among photographers. He was one of the most important and influential figures in 20th-century photography. His richest and most profound photographs were made between 1900 and 1927. It is from this period that Steichen selected his masterpieces and commissioned Aperture to publish his prints. Throughout his long career he worked in various styles, in black and white and in color; his subjects ranged from portraits to landscapes, from fashion to advertising, from dance to sculpture. As curator of the Museum of Modern Art for fifteen years, Steichen was responsible for many important exhibitions, including The Family of Man. In 1923 he became chief photographer for Condé Nast Publications, publishing regularly in Vogue and Vanity Fair for the next fifteen years. His richest and most profound photographs were made between 1900 and 1927. It is the masterpieces of this period that Steichen commissioned Aperture to publish as hand-pulled photogravures. In 1961, Steichen was honored with a solo exhibition at MoMA. In 1964, the Edward Steichen Photography Center was established at the museum. In 1967, he wrote: “Today I am no longer interested in photography as an art form. I believe it to be potentially the best means of explaining man to himself and his fellow men.” Steichen died in West Redding, Connecticut, shortly before his ninety-fourth birthday.
