Specialist Notes

Compared to the editorial events of Di Falco's "Descrittione", De Stefano's is disconcertingly simple: in fact, only this single edition exists, already rare in the 18th century and never republished. Furthermore, little or nothing is known about the author of this guide and to learn more we must rely on the fourth page of the book where we find the presentation of the Work to the Readers by Cola Anello Pacca, who was a lecturer in Medicine at the University of Naples. Certainly De Stefano was not a high-ranking intellectual but this does not explain the silence that surrounds him. Unless the "description", published right during the Council of Trent, suffered for some reason, the veto of reprinting by the Church precluding its lack of diffusion in the following years and the consequent oblivion by future readers. Unlike other works published in the sixteenth century, the "Descrittione" has the structure of a real guide. It is divided into four books: Delle chiese de' preti; Delle de' claustri a cui genitori. Of the monasteries of women. Of the stones scattered throughout the city.; he also transcribes all the epitaphs and epigraphs, correcting the Latin text, when inaccurate, with the relative translation into the vernacular "so as not to appear affected and to make myself understood by all". He describes in detail all the religious buildings with historical information on their origins and on the orders.
