How bidding works

Specialist Notes

Extremely rare complete copy of the four suppressed cards of fascicle O, of illustrious provenance. According to the intentions of the publisher, fascicle O was to be a duerno (unlike the other fascicles) but initially a notebook was printed, similar to the other fascicles. The suppression of 5 canzoni (O dio, o sommo bene, hor come fai - O malignant and hard heart - Ben ch 'io rida, balli et canti - E convien ti dica il vero - Una donna hada disire) led to the reduction of the fascicle to a duerno, but obviously notebooks of eight cards still circulated and ended up in some very rare copies of the edition. According to critics, this intervention during printing was decided by Paolo Manuzio to avoid censorship of rhymes considered licentious or simply facetious. All this with the intention of providing a lyrical and Petrarchan image of Lorenzo, devaluing instead the popular and laughing dimension of his lyric poetry, in accordance with the Venetian taste of the time.
