Information

Two oblong albums of approx. 325x24 mm. Cloth or leather covers with title and initials of the Italian AO stamped in gold on the front cover. The first album is made up of 33 cards each containing 5 or 6 small photographs of 90 or 180x60 mm applied to each side with a caption incorporated into the photo. The second album is made up of 71 cards each containing 1 folded panoramic photograph, 480x120 mm, or two medium-sized photographs, 120x160 mm, applied to each side and all accompanied by a label with a caption. Covers a little worn, but overall in excellent condition.
The over 600 photographs collected in the two albums show landscapes, animals, portraits of local people and monuments. The two albums fully belong to that branch of Italian photography of the time linked to the African colonies, which to this day has been little studied, eminently for ideological reasons. In the 1930s we find ourselves in the midst of the evolution of instant photography, but not yet entirely amateurish as would happen later in the following decades. Professional photographers, therefore, itinerant, but not of war, but of that “exotic” reality that was so popular in Italy, where photographs also circulated in the form of postcards. The subjects are therefore mostly portrayed in poses, especially female subjects with bare breasts, decidedly very daring for the time. Some of the photographs are certainly attributable to Modestino Baldinetti.
