Specialist Notes
The Dictionary of Hesychius of Alexandria (probably lived in the 5th century AD) is considered the largest of the Greek lexicons that antiquity has handed down to us; the text includes approximately 51,000 entries, ordered alphabetically. It is a copious list of strange words, forms and expressions, with an explanation of their meaning and often with a reference to the author who used them or to the region of Greece where they were most common, "precious for the quotations of ancient authors and for the numerous dialect glosses". It was first published in 1514 by Aldus.
