Specialist Notes
Second Aldine edition of Dante, in the second edition with the double hyphen in the title word "Descriptone" on the first title page.
Woodcut illustrations first appeared in the Giuntina octavo edition of 1506, which also contained a two-book dialogue on Hell. This version instead reflects the new topographical interest in Dante while the title of the previous Aldina, The Third Rimes, underlined its poetic aspects. The three famous woodcuts of Hell and Purgatory, designed by Trifone Gabriele, a friend of Bembo, were copied for Paganino's miniature editions of Dante.
