Marcus Gheeraerts The Elder [other forms of the name Marcus Gillerts the Elder, Marc Gérard and Marcus Garrett] (c. 1520 - c. 1590) was a Flemish painter, draughtsman, printmaker and engraver, active in Flanders and England. He created works of various genres, including portraits, religious paintings, landscapes and architectural themes. He designed the designs and heraldic decorations of tombs. He is well known for his engravings depicting maps of his hometown, Bruges, and for illustrations for Dutch publications telling the story of Aesop's Fables. His attention to naturalistic detail and his practice of drawing animals from living beings for prints had a significant influence on European book illustration. His son Marcus became an important court painter at the English court.
