Specialist Notes
The Fabulae were printed in three different issues in 1563, 1564, 1565, without typographical variations except for the different indication of the date. Printed by Paolo Manuzio for Vincenzo Luchini, they were so successful that they had more than 50 editions and translations throughout Europe. Among the many, La Fontaine and Perrault, who oversaw the French translation, were inspired by it. The 100 plates that accompany the text constitute one of the first Italian examples of etching and make this work one of the most beautiful illustrated books of the Italian sixteenth century; originally attributed to Titian, they are today definitively referred to Pirro Ligorio.
