Information

Psalter - Book of Hours according to the Roman custom
(Crown of Aragon? 15th century, with 19th-century additions).

Manuscript dimensions . Binding: 135 mm x 200 mm. Sheet dimensions: 130 mm x 185 mm. Writing area: 80 mm x 115 mm.
III + 212 parchment leaves. Numbered leaves, although with some gaps. Carmine Roman numeral numbering on the back of the leaf (unusual in the Crown of Aragon).
Single-column script . 18 lines per sheet. Gothic characters. Titles and headings in carmine, in the same hand as the text.
Collation : It is very difficult to count the number of quires given the absence of signatures. The first appears on folio XLv. Starting from folio XLIr, there are fifteen quires, but in quires 5, 7, 9, 11, and 15, a double leaflet is missing from each of them. Quire 14 shows the absence of folios, and 16, composed of 9 folios, reveals the absence of folios and even page markers. Starting from folio 180, the numbering jumps directly to folio 192, and there is no page marker until folio 210, from which it can be deduced that the codex has undergone alterations that have affected its content.

The codex features a series of initials with carmine-blue watermarks, or, conversely, carmine-blue with filaments extending beyond the margins of the page, characteristic of codices of the Crown of Aragon. They date back to the early 15th century. These initials typically span two lines.
Images
- Sheet III St. John the Evangelist and an unknown king ""David"?". 72 x 93 mm. It appears to be a late addition, perhaps from the 19th century.
- Folio XXIV. Medallion or clypeus with the Maiestas Domini located at the bottom of the page. It must date to the 19th century, as does the marginal decoration. 36 mm in diameter.
- Folio XXIIr Marginal decoration surrounding the three sections of the sheet. Male figure holding a phylactery. 19th century.
- Sheet LXr A Pope, a Bishop, an Emperor, and a Sainted King. 80 x 65 mm. By the same hand as the previous ones, and therefore a 19th-century reconstruction. Marginal decoration of vine or ivy leaves imitating the medieval world.
- Sheet CXLr Initial decorated with ivy leaves that reinterprets the medieval world.
- Sheet CLXr Initial decorated with ivy leaves that reinterprets the medieval world.

Specialist Notes

In my opinion, this is a psalter-book of hours made in the Crown of Aragon in the first quarter of the 15th century. The filigree initials and the Letanies with saints of Hispanic origin (Isidore, Aemilianus, Leocadia, Eulalia, Justa, and Rufina) and those of the Crown of Aragon (Eulalia, Narcissus, Thecla, Valero, and Felix) confirm this provenance. Narrative images and marginal decorations, some figurative, have been added to this original core, which appear to date to the 19th century.

I would like to sincerely thank Professor Josefina Planas Badenas for preparing this document. - Catedràtica d'Història de l'Art Departament de Geografia, Història i Història de l'Art
