Specialist Notes

Official edition of the proceedings of the Congress of Vienna, which met in the Austrian capital from September 18, 1814, to June 9, 1815. Established by the First Treaty of Paris of May 30, 1814, the congress was convened after the fall of Napoleon Bonaparte with the aim of redrawing the political structure of Europe after more than twenty years of wars and territorial conflicts. Austria, Great Britain, Prussia, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, and France, represented in particular by Prince Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand-Périgord, participated. In addition to redefining borders and alliances, the congress addressed issues such as freedom of maritime navigation and the abolition of the slave trade. Drawing on the principles of monarchical law, it also sanctioned the containment of the revolutionary and national aspirations of the European peoples.
The official and definitive edition of the proceedings of the congress is actually the fifth edition, published in Vienna in July 1816.
