Specialist Notes

A magnificent and extremely rare collection of engraved plates by the Belgian painter and engraver Antoine Cardon, dedicated to Naples and its Gulf. Of particular note is the reunion of the first four plates in a single volume, offering invaluable evidence of the antiquarian topography of the Phlegraean Fields, with particular attention to the ancient road system. Also included are the famous views entitled "View of Chiaia from the East," "View of Ponte Novo," "View of Chiaia from the West," and "View of Naples," based on paintings by Gabriele Ricciardelli and dedicated to important foreign figures, including Hamilton.
