Brussels, Eugène Henry Fricx, 1702. In-8° 3 vols.; 19th-century brown leather binding, with smooth spine in six compartments with gilt fillets and decorations, title and volume number in gilt on the spine on red and green leather inserts respectively; 19th-century marbled flyleaves; edges sprayed in red; numerous engravings in the text depicting places, ceremonies, events and figures from Jewish history; precious engraving on the frontispiece/headpiece with the title of the work (engraved by I. Bap.ta Berterham from a drawing by Richard van Orley); beautiful woodcuts at the headpieces, initials and endpapers. Ownership indications, to two different owners, on labels on the front pastedown (one bearing the inscription "Adolphe Goemaere de Menin" and the other "ex libris meis Alfred Dorff advocatus bruxellensis"); The work is complete, in almost excellent general condition, except for some signs of wear on the leather binding. § The lot contains by the same author Histoire de la guerre des Juifs contre les Romains , Bruxelles, Jean Léonard, 1738. In-8°. 2 vols. Same binding as the work [1.], with which it constitutes a complete set of works by Flavio, albeit from different editions (the volumes of this work are indicated on the spines with the numbers 4 and 5); 2 vols.; pp. LXXXIV, (8), 358, (17), (1 b.); 555, (38), (1 b.); numerous engravings in the text (6 x 7.5 cm) depicting sieges, surrenders and conquests of cities, scenes of daily life, capital executions, martyrdoms, battles of infantry and cavalry; beautiful woodcuts at the headpieces, initials and ends. Prov.: Ownership indications, to two different people, on labels on the front pastedown (one bearing the inscription "Adolphe Goemaere de Menin" and the other "ex libris meis Alfred Dorff advocatus bruxellensis"); the latter ownership is indicated by a blue ink stamp bearing the address (Alfred Dorff Avenue de la Toison d'or 67 Brussels).
Specialist Notes
II work: a very interesting and rare treatise (this edition by Leonard is not listed in the Unified Catalogue of Italian Libraries). The work is a precious translation, edited by the French writer and translator Robert Arnauld d'Andilly (28 May 1589 - 27 September 1674), of the famous text "The Jewish Wars" of 66-70 BC, the work of the Romanized Jewish historian Josephus Flavius (Hebrew: Joseph ben Matthias; Latin: Josephus Flavius; Jerusalem, c. 37 - Rome, c. 100), written in Greek around 75; it includes the translator's notice to readers (Avertissement), then the approval (Approbation), made in Paris on 19 June 1668, with Imprimatur in Brussels on 16 January 1675, and the extract of privileges, also in Brussels on 27 October 1694; following, the author's life, written by himself and the author's preface; after the text, at the end of each volume, after the text is the table of chapters (index); furthermore, at the end of the second and final volume, after the table of chapters, is the table of subjects of the two volumes.
