Important work on Florentine history by Benedetto Varchi (1503-1565), historian and humanist, man of letters, erudite, member of the Florentine Academy, priest, born and died in Florence. This work was actually printed in Augsburg by Paolo Kuhzio and edited by Francesco Settimani (see Parenti, Dictionary of false, invented or supposed printing places, 56). It includes the notice from "the Printer to the readers", the "Life of Messer Benedetto Varchi, written by the Abbot Don Silvano Razzi: to the Illustrious and Reverend Lord Bernardo Medici", followed by the dedication "To his Most Illustrious and Excellent Lord, and Most Observant Master, Cosimo Medici, Second Duke of Florence, Benedetto Varchi"; then the "Preface" and, finally, preceded by a double-page plate with the "Branch of the Medici Family", begins the History ("Della Fiorentina Storia di Mess. Benedetto Varchi") divided into sixteen books; at the end is the "Table of the most notable things". The work concludes with the "Errors that occurred in printing". This copy has been purged of the episode relating to the violence used by Pier Luigi Farnese against the bishop of Fano, originally narrated on pages 639-640, but reinstated through a contemporary manuscript sheet (loose annex, after page 640).
