Specialist Notes

Interesting treatise on marriage (the first edition, published posthumously in Lyon in 1545, was a revision of the work Sylva nuptialis originally published in 1521, now almost untraceable) divided into six books, in which the Author, the Italian jurist Giovanni Nevizzano (died 1540) deals with marriage, dowry, filiation, adultery and succession, in particular the legal aspects of marriage in light of social and cultural issues (orders of the Princes, positions of the Guelph and Ghibelline factions), in order to resolve the question of whether it is appropriate to marry or not. Due to the caustic tone used by the Author against women and the institution of marriage, in favor of concubinage and free love, this work aroused much controversy at the time and was condemned to the Index. § Text originally composed in Spanish ["Obras y Dias Manual de Senores y Principes" (1629)] by Father Gio. Eusebio Norimbergh [Nieremberg, Juan Eusebio] of the Society of Jesus and translated into Italian. Trans. name on fol. A3v [Pamelli, Gherardetto], at the bottom of the preface dedicated to GB Panfili, Duke of Carpineto. Variant of the title: "Daily Occupations for Every State of People". Membership label glued to the front cover of the "Mount Street Jesuit Centre" in London (Jesuit coat of arms and "114 Mount Street" written on it).
