Specialist Notes
A rare collection of short stories, known as The Mischief of Women—an ironic nickname given by the Turks—was translated into French in 1707 by François Petis de La Croix, who referred it to the famous Chec Zadè, tutor to the Ottoman Sultan Murad II (r. 1421–1451). Intended to educate and entertain the young ruler, the stories extolled virtue and condemned vice, while also propagating a negative image of Turkish women, described in the preface as cunning and idle, addicted to deceit and pleasure to escape domestic confinement. The text is of particular interest for its rich representation of Eastern culture—from themes of magic and justice to the social role of women, and aspects of politics and religion.
