Specialist Notes

In 1951, Vacheron Constantin created a new radical timepiece that broke the aesthetic codes of that time, reference 4737, which Italian collectors affectionately nicknamed "Cioccolatone" thanks to its shape ironically reminiscent of a square of Swiss chocolate. Its dramatically oversized, curved, and sinuous square case was unique for any brand in that era, making the model standing out from all other watches on the market. Soon after the time-only version, a more complicated and prestigious model with complete calendar and moon phases was introduced, reference 4764. It became one of Vacheron Constantin’s most sought-after watches of all time, equally for its avant-garde aspect and rareness: according to our researches, less than 50 pieces were produced in total until 1957.Its iconic status was further illustrated in 2003, when Vacheron Constantin celebrated the model introducing a new triple calendar with moon phases named the "Toledo 1952".To the best of our knowledge, the present watch is the very first Vacheron Constatin 4764 ever appeared in the Italian auction market, becoming a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own an exceedingly rare timepiece.
