Woody Woodpecker, limited to a run of just 300 copies, signed by Walter Lantz. This is a tribute to the 39th episode of the "Born to Peck" series. Framed. Woody Woodpecker is one of the most recognizable and irreverent cartoon characters of the so-called "Golden Age" of American animation. He was co-created by Italian-American cartoonist Walter Lantz and storyboard artist Ben "Bugs" Hardaway, making his first appearance in the 1940 short film Knock Knock. The animated short "Born to Peck," produced by Walter Lantz Productions and released on February 25, 1952, is the 39th episode of the Woody Woodpecker series. The plot of "Born to Peck" stands out for being unexpectedly touching and unusual. It features an elderly and weakened Woody, whose beak is too fragile to even peck a tree. Depressed, Woody attempts suicide by jumping off a cliff. Irreverent humor and fourth-wall breaking come into play when an off-screen cartoonist (who Lantz himself claimed to have directed) erases the woodpecker pit and replaces it with a Fountain of Youth, rejuvenating Woody and allowing him to return to action. The short's title, "Born to Peck," emphasizes the compulsive and inevitable nature of Woody's character: his destiny, his raison d'être, is precisely to peck (and cause trouble).
