Information
Cardstock print signed by Milo Manara, reproducing the famous Spider-Woman cover drawn by the Master of Eroticism. Dimensions: 21 x 29.7 cm. The case of Milo Manara's Spider-Woman cover represents one of the most controversial moments in the recent history of American comics, marking the clash between European erotic aesthetics and the sensibilities of the American market. In 2014, Marvel Comics commissioned the master of Italian eroticism to create a "variant cover" (an alternative collector's cover) for issue #1 of the new series dedicated to Jessica Drew (Spider-Woman). The illustration showed the superheroine climbing a roof, depicted in a very accentuated position on all fours. As soon as the image was released online, it unleashed a wave of criticism from publications such as The Guardian, Time, and numerous industry blogs. Many critics considered the pose "blatantly sexualized" and inconsistent with the character's narrative, calling it an inappropriate choice for a comic aimed at attracting a female readership. To quell the controversy without withdrawing the issue, Marvel made a graphical change in the print version: the title was strategically positioned to cover the character's back, softening the pose's visual impact.
