Information

Original comic strip by Giuseppe Tisselli for "The Adventures of Giuseppe Pignata." The comic strip measures 32 x 16.5 cm and is mounted on 35 x 24 cm cardboard. The collaboration between Sergio Tisselli and Magnus (Roberto Raviola) on "The Adventures of Giuseppe Pignata" represents one of the finest and most original moments in Italian comics, a true passing of the baton between two Bolognese masters. The comic, originally published in installments in the magazine Nova Express between 1993 and 1995, is inspired by a historical event: the escape of Giuseppe Pignata, secretary to eminent Roman cardinals, from the prisons of the Inquisition in 1688, where he had been held on charges of heresy (related to Quietism). In this work, Magnus does not draw, but acts as a true director and screenwriter. The creative process was unique: Magnus broke the story down into individual panels, guiding Tisselli in the creation of each image. Once the drawings were completed, Magnus himself cut and pasted the vignettes onto the sheets to create the final layout of the panel, personally overseeing the balance of whites and the narrative flow. Through his skillful use of watercolor, Tisselli recreated 17th-century Italy with an almost cinematic light and texture. His attention to costumes, architecture, and faces transforms each vignette into a small painting, perfectly conveying the oppressiveness of prison and the breath of freedom during escape.
