Ringraziamo il dottor Tátrai Vilmos, per aver visionato l'opera dal vivo: secondo lo studioso, il dipinto, databile al primo decennio del Seicento, può essere riferito ad un pittore nordico attivo a Roma, influenzato da Adam Elsheimer (Francoforte sul Meno 1578 – Roma 1610); si veda, come confronto, il San Lorenzo che si prepara al Martirio proprio di Elsheimer. Alcuni motivi, soprattutto la figura che versa monete d'oro da un vaso, risalgono all'affresco di Raffaello (e all'incisione tratta da esso) dello stesso soggetto, nelle Logge Vaticane; nel dipinto si trovano inoltre alcune affinità con i modi di Pieter Lastman (Amsterdam 1583 – 1633) presente a Roma fra il 1604 e il 1607.
