THE RARE FIRST EDITION OF TANSILLO'S MOST IMPORTANT TEXT
The editorial process surrounding the posthumous printing of the Tears of Saint Peter is complex. It was first published in 13 'pianti' edited by Giovan Battista Attendolo with cuts and alterations imposed by ecclesiastical censorship (Vico Equense, Cacchi, 1585) and then in 1606, expanded into 15 'canti', edited by Tomaso Costo (Venice, Barezzi), who added a polemical Discourse in which, not without arbitrariness, he demolished the princeps of 1585.
