Specialist Notes
This interesting hagiographic treatise on the life of Saint Asprenus is one of the rare testimonies of the engraving activity of Giovanna Dorotea Pesche (Naples, active 1684 – ca. 1706). Daughter and disciple of Federico Pesche, she began an independent career in 1684 which, although rarely documented, reveals traits of singular refinement. Her activity is in fact attested by only a few surviving examples, including the panel of Saint Asprenus and the frontispiece of Biagio Altomare's De nullitatibus (1700). After 1706, all trace of her is lost: a brief artistic career, but one capable of leaving a precious mark on the Neapolitan publishing scene of the time.
