Specialist Notes

Gaetano de Bottis (Torre del Greco, 1721 – Naples, 1790), a priest and scholar, taught at the Seminary of Naples, the Nunziatella, and the University. A passionate naturalist, he devoted his research primarily to Vesuvius, of which he meticulously described numerous eruptions. His works, both scientific and historical, remain precious testimonies of eighteenth-century Neapolitan volcanology.
