Dedicated by the author to King Ferdinand IV, the work aims to "collect in a single volume what has been produced separately by them [authors], and by others" regarding the cities of the Kingdom. Furthermore, Campo advises: "I have decided to add to the ancient history of places a modern one, both regarding their physical and civil position, as well as that which concerns the productions of both art and nature."
