Specialist Notes

Domenico Luigi Barone (Liveri 1685 – Naples 1757), Marquis of Liveri and inspector of the Teatro San Carlo, was a prominent playwright and theater director in eighteenth-century Naples. He founded an amateur dramatics company and achieved success at court with his celebrated comedies. Rich in comic intrigue, Spanish expressions, and dialect, his comedies were distinguished by their lively stage presence and innovative use of theatrical space. Considered a precursor to Goldoni, he left a lasting mark on modern drama.
