Specialist Notes

In June 1560, Pope Pius IV, successor to Paul IV, arrested the leaders of the Carafa family for abuses of power during the previous papacy. Cardinal Carlo Carafa and Giovanni Carafa, Duke of Paliano, were imprisoned, tried, and brutally executed. Their nephew, Alfonso, was instead granted freedom and papal clemency. However, under Pius V, this decision was paradoxically revised. The pontiff clarified that the Carafas had been unjustly convicted, while the only culprit was Alessandro Palentieri, who had brought the case in his capacity as tax lawyer of the Apostolic Chamber.
