The Arabian-American Oil Company (Aramco) paid the government of Abdulaziz $3 million a year in oil revenues. The contract stipulated payment in gold. To this end, the Philadelphia Mint began minting these coins in denominations of four pounds (sovereigns). These coins had limited circulation in Saudi Arabia; some Aramco workers even used them as poker chips. Most were melted down into gold bars and sold in Macau.
