Oblong album containing 24 hand-colored and retouched lithographs, nos. 1-14: approximately 205 x 340 mm (the first series), nos. 15-24: 260 x 394 mm (the second series). The first part was printed by L. Turgis in Paris, the second by Bulla Freres, also in Paris. The engravings are mostly by Gustav Doré, fifteen in total, the others by Walter, Gluck, Gaildran & Tirpenne, and Wattier. Bound in dark percale cloth.
Specialist Notes
Splendid album of lithographs, mostly by Gustav Doré, illustrating the Italian Wars of Independence of 1859. The main battles are depicted: Montebello, Varese, Palestro, Marignan, Magenta, Solferino, Sesia, etc. In addition to detailed plates on the death of some Generals, the passage of the French army, the entry into Milan of King Vittorio Emanuele II, etc. Rare and valuable.
