Venice, Aldo Manuzio, March 1505. In 4°, 210 x 125 mm. Aldine anchor on the verso of the last leaf. This is variant B in which the dedication to Lucrezia Borgia , contained on the first two leaves, is missing c.a8 and incorrect, with a tear in the lower margin of c8, otherwise a SPLENDID COPY IN ITS CONTEMPORARY VENETIAN BINDING , so-called "Aldine", with blind and gold stampings on the covers and clasps.
Specialist Notes
First edition of Bembo's famous novel , set in Asolo, where the court of Caterina Cornaro, Queen of Cyprus, is celebrating the wedding of a lady: over three days, several Venetian gentlemen delicately and lively discuss love with as many ladies. Bembo began composing Gli Asolani in 1500, out of love for Maria Savorgnan, but completed it in 1504, with a dedication, dated August 1, to Lucrezia Borgia (''requited, the most ambitious and memorable, but also risky and poignant love of his life,'' as Carlo Dionisotti described it).
