Specialist Notes

De Rossi captures on paper thoughts, sketches, and caricatures that depict this crucial historical moment for Italy . It's November 1919; Sturzo's Popular Party had been founded in January of that same year. The party's first congress was held in Bologna on June 14, 1919. The key words marked on the paper are evocative: Moment, Future, Italy, Thirty Years, Catholic Unity, etc.

"On 23 and 24 November 1918, Sturzo convened in Rome, at the headquarters of the Roman Union, in Via dell'Umiltà 36, a group of qualified Catholic personalities, such as Antonio Boggiano-Pico, Pietro Borromeo, Pietro Campilli, Stefano Cavazzoni, Mario Cingolani, Giulio De Rossi, Giuseppe Genuardi, Achille Grandi, Giovanni Maria Longinotti, Vincenzo Mangano, Egilberto Martire, Paolo Mattei-Gentili, Umberto Merlin, Giovan Battista Preda, Giulio Seganti, Umberto Tupini and Giovanni Battista Valente. It was decided to convene a 'small constituent assembly' for 16 and 17 December, composed of 41 representatives of all the Italian regions. (...) On 18 January 1919, the provisional Commission, meeting at the Santa Chiara Hotel in Rome, published the appeal to the country, addressed «to all free and strong men» and the program of the Italian People's Party. The appeal was characterized by a strong ethical and civil tension, by the reference to the problems and realities of the post-war period, to the expectations of a peace based on justice, and to the need for political, administrative, and social transformations." (Partito Popolare, Treccani sub vocis).
