«First poetry collection published by Mondadori, it was awarded the Viareggio Prize in 1954: it announces a new dawn represented by the entry into history of southern farmers within a peculiar relationship with neorealism for which an inclusive and democratic poetics prevails. The happy conjunction of anthropological substratum and high literary tradition gives shape to a new language. (…) Scotellaro was a "peasant poet" like Sergej Esenin and Attila Jószef, «two of the most refined artists of modern European poetry» (Eugenio Montale, 1954).
