Information

The Council of Egypt , First edition, 1963, Einaudi publishing house. Editorial cloth without dust jacket. In a letter dated October 19, 1962, Italo Calvino wrote to the author: «I am following up on my last one to tell you that «The Council of Egypt» will be published in January, with a great launch. (There is talk of an initial print run of twenty thousand copies.) The manuscript has already been through the technical office. If you have corrections, you can do them in the proofs. We will now have to study the flap, the slogans for the back and for the advertising.» In October 1962, among other things, chapters V and XI were published in pre-original in «Contemporaneo» number 53 with modest variations. From the correspondence with the publishing house it emerges that Sciascia would have liked a drawing by Il Greco for the cover, but in a letter dated 24 January 1963 an enthusiastic Giulio Bollati communicated to the author: «For your cover I proposed it to Einaudi (who approved the idea).» A particularly fitting work by Goya was chosen for the cover, the drawing «Malos Poetas».
