The work bears, on the back, a cartouche with the following handwritten annotation: “This reproduction of an ancient print was given to me by Prince Borromeo in 1935, on the occasion of the Stresa conference held in the Borromeo palace on Isola Bella.”
The front features the handwritten signatures of some of the key political figures present at the event: Ramsay MacDonald (Prime Minister of the United Kingdom), John Simon (British Foreign Secretary), Pierre-Étienne Flandin (President of the French Council of Ministers) and Pierre Laval (French Foreign Minister).

Specialist Notes

The Stresa Conference, held between 11 and 14 April 1935, was an important diplomatic summit that brought together Benito Mussolini, Ramsay MacDonald and Pierre Laval, with the aim of strengthening European cooperation and opposing the expansionist ambitions of Nazi Germany led by Adolf Hitler.
