Specialist Notes

Pier Andrea Forzani Accolti was welcomed in Florence on 1 March 1639 by Francesco, a descendant of the Accolti family, and Francesca di Zanobi. In 1658 he entered the service of the Grand Duke Ferdinando II de' Medici, whom he followed on important missions, playing a role of primary importance, particularly in Lombardy. After the death of the Grand Duke in 1670, he placed himself at the disposal of Prince Francesco Maria de' Medici, later cardinal. In 1672 he graduated in Pisa "in both laws". He accompanied Cardinal de' Medici to Rome, and became his personal secretary as well as his confidant and friend: he was at his side in the three conclaves from which Popes Alexander VIII, Innocent XII and Clement XI were elected. He became a consultant to the Holy Office and secretary of Public Health. He had a fair amount of fame among his contemporaries as a poet, delighting in both the vernacular and Latin muses. He was a friend of F. Redi and knew A. Segni. In 1708 he was elected consul of the Florentine Academy; affiliated to the Crusca with the name of Sincero, he was among the collaborators of the Vocabolario; he was a member of the Accademia dei Gelati of Bologna and of those of the Innominati of Bra and of the Filopoli of Faenza.
