Information

Typewritten letter signed and addressed by the President of the Italian Republic Luigi Einaudi to the Minister of the Treasury Giuseppe Pella. From Rome, 14 April 1951. 278 x 205, 272 x 209 mm. The letter is composed of two separate sheets (of different sizes and types), typewritten only on the front and stapled together. On the left margin of the first page there is a pencil note: "letter to De Gasperi in which I requested the freezing of expenses. P.", presumably in Pella's hand. On the second sheet, after the signature, there is a handwritten postscript in Einaudi's hand. The letter is the response of Luigi Einaudi, President of the Republic at the time, to the report on the Italian economic situation sent by Giuseppe Pella, Minister of the Treasury in the government led by Alcide De Gasperi. The President observes that the average income of those who would benefit from the new planned expenditure is perhaps already higher than that of those who would have to pay for it; It is therefore important to evaluate the issue and avoid dragging the state finances even lower than they already are.
Together in the lot:
Autograph letter signed and addressed by the President of the Italian Republic Luigi Einaudi to Giuseppe Pella, then Minister of the Treasury, from Rome, January 16, 1953, together with Pella's autographed letter of reply, from Rome, January 20, 1953. 198 x 130 mm. The two letters, both written on a single sheet of paper, are stapled together. The first letter is written only on the front of the first sheet and is a covering letter for an enclosed (but not present here) translation by Einaudi of an article from the “Economist” sent to Pella. In the second letter, written on both sides, Pella thanks the President for the translation of the article.

Also included in the lot is a funeral card from Einaudi's widow, an autographed letter addressed by his son Giulio to the President of the Italian Republic Giovanni Gronchi (dated November 15, 1961), and a short illustrated publication in memory of Einaudi (dated November 30, 1961). 96x34 mm. Funeral card from Einaudi's wife numbered 255 in pencil, address added in ink (Largo Volumnia 1, Rome). 179x177 mm.
