Specialist Notes
Although the title page states that it is an original work by Domenichi, it is a literal translation of the Latin tragedy of the same name composed by Gregorio Correr when he was only 18 years old, and published anonymously in Venice in 1558 by Paolo Manuzio (in Academia Veneta). Correr (1409-1464) received an excellent literary education at the Mantuan school of Vittorino da Feltre and together with the sons of the Marquis of Mantua at the Gonzaga court; he was a man of letters and followed the papal court in its various travels; shortly before dying he was appointed Patriarch of Venice. Domenichi was one of the greatest translators and editors of classical texts for Giolito, Scotto and Giunti. The tragedy, dedicated to Giannotto Castiglione, is taken from sources by Seneca and Ovid, in verse, without division into acts. Rather rare edition. Allacci 648. Clubb 391.
