Extremely rare first edition edited by Celano, published a year before his death, which quickly became unobtainable and was followed by other reprints starting in 1724. Celano practiced law until 1647, interrupted following a conviction for having written a text in favor of the Masaniello uprising. After his detention he entered the Congregation of the Apostolic Missions of Naples and in 1664 he was appointed canon of the Cathedral. His vast knowledge of the history of Naples, his activity as an archaeologist and art historian and the long years spent in Neapolitan libraries and archives led him to the drafting of this main work. His famous Guide, printed in 1692, was dedicated to Pope Innocent XII of the Pignatelli family of Naples. It was based on a large number of sources and accompanied by precious and detailed engravings. The Guide leads the reader-visitor through the streets of Naples along an itinerary that starts from the Cathedral of Naples, after numerous stops distributed over ten Days, reaches first the village of Santa Maria di Loreto and then, touching the hamlets near the city of Naples, ends on the top of Mount Somma and Vesuvius.
