Specialist Notes
It is in all probability an assembly that starts from the work of Valesio, Collection of the most illustrious and famous cities of the whole world, Venice 1579m, which contains 144  ;printed engravings, two per page, on the sides matching the cards, mmany of which signed by Francesco Valesio, some by Martino Rota. The volume integrates Valesio's work with a large number of other city prints, some datable to the first decades of the 17th century.
Francesco Valegio or Valesio (1560 ca.-1650 ca.) worked almost exclusively in Venice as a painter, draftsman , engraver, publisher and print dealer. The artistic production was remarkable: portraits, historical and religious subjects, illustrations for books, geographical maps, city plans and landscape engravings. His most demanding chalcographic work is undoubtedly the Collection of the most illustrious and famous cities from all over the world to which Valegio contributed 112 engravings while others, up to around 322, were made by various engravers, including many by Martino Rota da Sebenico.
